Boardgame Review – Dixit

Dixit is a party game with a twist, and boy, is this a fun game!  Here’s the premise.  Dixit is a party game where you have a bunch of cards with totally bizarre pictures on them.  Each round a person selects a card from his hand and thinks up a description for it.  You don’t want to make it too hard, but you also don’t want to make it too easy.  Then everyone selects a card from their hand they think matches the description you gave and the cards get shuffled up and everyone has to decide on which one they think describes yours.  If everyone guesses yours, you lose points, if they guess yours and other peoples cards, all those people gain points.  The people who pick the correct one always get points.

So that’s the premise to the game and really, it is about that simple.  You really need to be creative in this game too.  It can be hard to think of a name for your card, so sometimes you have to say the first thing that came into your mind.  I’ll give you an example with the card below:

The easy thing to do with this one would be to say, “Musical chairs” and then everyone would pick a card from their hand they thought matched that description.  However, when it comes time for everyone to secretly guess the answer with numbered chits, I think this would be far too easy.  So I might change it up and say “Concerto” which could be less obvious.  It just depends really!
The components are fairly standard stuff, but all nice.  The cards are oversized and should hold up to a good amount of playing. There’s even an expansion out that adds more cards!   Dixit is produced in the United States by Asmodee Games and designed by Jean-Louis Roubira.
Final Thoughts:  A good game for the price and if you like party games, this is a fun one.  People can say some wacky things during this game and the laughs can be hard to stop once they get rolling.  This party game requires some thought at times though, so some people may not enjoy it as much.  I’m scared to think of how this would play whilst drinking.
Verdict: star-fullstar-fullstar-fullstar-fullstar-fullstar-fullstar-fullstar-fullstar-emptystar-empty  8/10
